The Mock Fusion Guide
Teriann ShrumMachine embroidery meets the art of crochet in the Mock Fusion technique—a specialized "In-the-Hoop" (ITH) workflow that creates beautiful, dimensional quilt blocks with a handmade touch.
Because this method pushes the boundaries of fabric and stabilizer, I often get questions about how to achieve that perfect, professional finish. Here are the most frequently asked questions to help you succeed with your next project.
Does the type of fabric I use affect the fraying?
Yes, significantly. While all cotton has a natural tendency to fray when cut, starting with a higher-grade quilter's cotton is your best defense. High-quality fabrics feature a higher thread count and a much tighter weave. This structural integrity holds up better during the embroidery and punching process, allowing the decorative crochet border to bind the edges securely for a clean, durable finish.
Why do you insist on a "Dry-Float" method?
Water Soluble Stabilizer (WSS) is the "magic" of this project, but it is also its most sensitive component. Even a fine mist of temporary spray adhesive can begin to dissolve the stabilizer prematurely, leading to registration shifts or stitch loops. By using the Tape-Secured Float method, we keep the WSS bone-dry and structurally sound until the very last step.
Why is the Crop-O-Dile recommended over scissors?
Precision is key. While you can use snips, the Crop-O-Dile .25" Power Punch is designed to cut through the topper, batting, and stabilizer in one clean "click." This creates a perfectly uniform hole that won't snag your yarn or distort the fabric as you work your crochet border.
My stabilizer is hooped—will it still shift?
As long as your stabilizer is hooped drum-tight, it will not shift. The "Floating" technique refers only to the fabric and batting layers. By hooping only the WSS, you maintain maximum tension on the foundation of the design while keeping your decorative layers flat and uncompressed.
